XAUUSD Trading Journal — Why Every Gold Trader Needs One
XAUUSD (gold) is the favourite instrument of ICT and prop firm traders for a reason: it moves, it respects liquidity, and it pays. It is also one of the fastest ways to blow a funded account. Without a journal built for the specific behaviour of gold, you are flying blind. This guide explains why XAUUSD traders need a specialised journal, which ICT setups actually work on gold, and how AI insights can accelerate your improvement.
Why XAUUSD Is Unique to Trade
Gold is not a currency pair. It does not behave like EURUSD or GBPUSD. It reacts to USD strength, real yields, geopolitical risk, central bank flows, and pure speculative liquidity. Spreads widen around news, slippage is real, and a 'normal' candle on XAUUSD can be 50 pips. That is why setups that work on majors often fail on gold — and vice versa.
High Volatility — Why Journaling Is Non-Negotiable
Gold can move 200–400 pips in a single London or NY session. That volatility cuts both ways: a clean ICT setup can deliver 5R in under an hour, and a sloppy entry can be at 3R loss before your stop even fills. The only way to separate skill from variance on an instrument this volatile is sample size + structured journaling.
- Log entry time to the minute — gold reacts to NY open within seconds
- Always record spread / slippage notes on news days
- Tag whether news was active when you entered
- Track planned vs realised R — gold has the biggest gap between the two
ICT Setups That Work Best on XAUUSD
Not every ICT setup translates equally to gold. After thousands of logged XAUUSD trades, certain patterns consistently outperform on this instrument.
1. London Liquidity Sweep + NY Reversal
Gold loves to sweep Asian range highs/lows in London, then reverse during the NY AM session. Tagging this combination in your journal will quickly become one of your highest-expectancy setups.
2. FVG + Order Block Confluence
A 15m FVG inside a 1H order block is one of the highest-probability entries on XAUUSD. Tag both setups on the trade so you can filter for the confluence later.
3. Silver Bullet (10:00–11:00 NY)
Gold respects the Silver Bullet window almost too well. Many funded traders take ONLY Silver Bullet setups on XAUUSD and ignore everything else. A journal will tell you if that strategy fits your edge.
4. CHoCH on Higher Timeframe + LTF Entry
Catching a 1H or 4H CHoCH on gold with a 5m entry produces some of the largest R-multiples available in any market. Track these separately — they are rare, but they pay the month.
Session Timing for XAUUSD (London / New York)
If you only trade gold in one session, make it the NY AM session (08:30–11:30 NY). London open (02:00–05:00 NY) is the second-best window. The Asian session on XAUUSD is mostly noise and consolidation — log a month of Asian trades and the data will tell you the same story.
- Asian — low expectancy, used mostly to define the range
- London — strong moves, often manipulation followed by reversal
- New York AM — highest expectancy window for ICT setups on gold
- Silver Bullet (10:00–11:00 NY) — gold's cleanest one-hour edge
Prop Firm Risk Management on Gold
Gold's volatility is a feature for skilled traders and a death sentence for over-leveraged ones. The number one reason traders blow funded accounts on XAUUSD is using the same lot size they would on EURUSD. Gold's pip value and average range mean position size must be cut significantly to keep risk constant.
- Never risk more than 0.5–1% per trade on gold (vs 1–2% on majors)
- Cut size further on red folder news days
- Log every news-day trade separately for review
- Track daily drawdown distance live — gold can hit it in one bad entry
How AI Insights Help XAUUSD Traders Improve
Reviewing 100+ gold trades manually is brutal. AI-powered review reads your full trade history and surfaces the patterns you would never catch yourself — which session is actually paying you, which setup is bleeding R, whether you over-trade after a win, whether your average loss is bigger after losses (revenge trading). Frx King Journal includes an AI Weekly Review and AI Insights page that gives you an honest, no-flattery assessment of your performance.
